Shingle Species

There are thousands of species that we have recorded on shingle habitats in Rye Bay.

They can be divided in to 4 categories;

·      Common generalists – considered to be common in Britain, BUT not confined to shingle habitats e.g. Greenfinch.

·      Rare generalists – considered to be rare in Britain, BUT not confined to shingle habitats, e.g. Medicinal Leech.

·      Common specialists – considered to be common in Britain AND usually found in shingle habitats, e.g. Yellow-horned Poppy.

·      Rare specialists - considered to be rare in Britain AND confined to shingle habitats, e.g. Sea Pea.

Here “rare” is used to describe species that are Nationally Notable or on the Red List or a Schedule 1 species or have a Sussex Species Action Plan.
